A Grand Gathering of the World Cultures - Expo 2010 Shanghai China

Chinese President Hu Jintao, during the gala opening in which 2,300 performers and musicians from all over the world took part, declared,

“Expo 2010 Shanghai is now open!"

Chinese local media report that the cost of producing the event could be as much as $58bn (£38bn) - more than was spent on the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Some estimates say this figure could finally be even higher.

It also reports that Shanghai has increased security measures significantly for the event. An added 8,000 police officers have been brought in to help Shanghai's 46,000-strong police force to guard the city.

Theme: The theme of Expo 2010 is "Better City, Better Life," representing the common wish of the whole humankind for a better living in future urban environments.
This theme represents a central concern of the international community for future policy making, urban strategies and sustainable development.

Expo Emblem: The emblem, depicting the image of three people-you, me, him/her holding hands together, symbolizes the big family of mankind. 
 
Haibao: Created from a Chinese character meaning people, the mascot "Haibao" embodies the character of Chinese culture.
